There’s a special kind of magic that comes from merging art with a space that nurtures growth, reflection, and connection.
Last week, I had the joy of painting a mural in the Workshop room at Launceston Farm in Dorset, a place that is not only a working farm but also a sanctuary for retreats and school visits. If you're looking for a local mural artist read on to find out how to work with me on your own project...
When approached to create a mural for this unique space, I knew it needed to be something that resonated with the abundant surroundings yet felt at home within the serene atmosphere of the room. I collaborated closely with the team at Launceston Farm, presenting three bespoke concepts that each told a different story of nature's grace. Ultimately, they chose the swallow design—a choice that feels perfect for a space that welcomes so many visitors looking for inspiration and renewal.
The swallows, with their fluid movement and elegant forms, embody a sense of freedom and vitality. This design became a way to bring the outdoors in, reflecting the life and energy of the landscape surrounding the farm. It was important to me that the mural was visually exciting but didn’t dominate the room; it needed to provide a gentle lift to the walls without overwhelming the calm and tranquil environment that visitors come to experience.
With the skilled assistance of fellow local illustrator, Becky Dodd, we set out to bring this vision to life. Together, we worked with care and consideration, allowing the mural to unfold naturally over the course of several days. The swallows began to dance across the wall, creating a narrative of movement and grace—a nod to the farm’s dynamic yet peaceful spirit.
As I painted, I was mindful of how art has the power to transform a space, to create a mood, to encourage pause and reflection. This mural is a celebration of the natural world—a tribute to the beauty of slowing down and finding joy in the simple, yet profound, moments of life. It is my hope that it becomes a backdrop for many meaningful experiences in this room, from moments of quiet meditation to the shared laughter of a school group.
Launceston Farm’s Workshop room now holds this piece of art as a conversation with nature, a mural that dances with the swallows and sings with the rhythm of the countryside. I am grateful for the opportunity to have contributed to this beautiful space and look forward to seeing how it inspires those who pass through.
